Ghana Materials Price Report, October 2026

Every month we track what the raw materials of a Ghanaian workshop cost in dollars, and what that means in cedis. This page is the October 2026 issue. Use it before you accept your next supplier quote.

Updated on 10 Oct 2026. Sources named per figure.

The rate first

Materials are priced in dollars, but you buy in cedis. The mid-market rate this month is GHS 11.77 = USD 1 (Xe mid-market rate, 10 Oct 2026). Every cedi figure below is that rate applied to the benchmark. Your supplier’s bank rate will be a little worse, and their margin sits on top of that.

The five material groups

Global benchmarks, each with its source and date. A benchmark is a floor, not a verdict: freight, duties and margin explain the rest of a fair local price.

Steel and metals

Rebar: USD 513 per tonne (China), USD 1,036 (USA), USD 875 (Germany)

Regional mills trade far apart. A local quote sits somewhere between the Chinese mill price and the landed cost of Western steel.

Plastics and resins

LDPE general purpose: EUR 1,275 per tonne (Europe)

Resin is an oil price with a margin on top. When crude moves, your next resin quote follows within weeks.

Chemicals and paint

Titanium dioxide: USD 2.08 per kilogram (north-east Asia), USD 2.98 (Europe)

Titanium dioxide is the pigment in nearly every white and light paint. It is the input to watch when a paint supplier re-quotes.

Timber

African sawnwood: USD 639 per cubic metre; logs: USD 405 per cubic metre

Export demand sets the floor for local timber. A strong dollar earns exporters more, and local prices feel it.

Packaging and freight

Container freight: USD 4,351 per 40-foot box, down 2% this week

Imported kraft paper, cartons and labels all carry freight. A falling freight line is room to ask your supplier to hold a price.

What Ghana itself says

The Ghana Statistical Service producer price index rose 4.4% over the year to August 2026, up from 4.0% in July. Consumer inflation was 5.2% in September. When a material quote rises far faster than these figures and its dollar benchmark, the rise is no longer explained by inputs, and that is the part worth a conversation.

One worked line

Take rebar. The Chinese mill price of USD 513 per tonne converts at this month’s rate to about GHS 6,038.01 per tonne before freight, duty, delivery and margin. If your quote for ordinary iron rods lands near GHS 12,000.00 per tonne, most of the gap can still be legitimate. If it lands well above last quarter’s quote while the dollar and the mill price barely moved, the unexplained part is yours to question.

That check takes our software under two minutes on a real quote. The benchmarks above are the same inputs our audit uses, together with your own past prices, which we build as Ghanaian shops audit their quotes with us.
